As we made our way down the Rhine, we cruised past Cologne. The picture on the right below is of the very famous Cologne Cathedral. After we had gone by, we learned that Cologne (and this magnificent cathedral) were only a 15-minute train ride from Bonn. Had we known, we would have gone!

Next stop was Nijmegan, in the Netherlands where we toured a church that is no longer a church (St. Steven’s) and photographed another which had so much renovation scaffolding we have no idea what it was. It seemed as though 80% of the churches in Europe are being renovated all the time.

After the main tour, we embarked by bus for Bruges, Belgium, site of our post-trip excursion. On the way, we spent several hours in Ghent. If you have read the book or seen the movie the Monuments Men, you will recognize these two cities as having very valuable works of art which the Monuments Men recovered: the Ghent Altarpiece and the Bruges Madonna. We were fortunate to be able to see both of these.

The last stop on our trip was in Brussels, Belgium where we spent two days touring on our own before flying home. While there we visited the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula.
