Trips

Sun., 1/12 - Puerto Montt, Chile

The Zaandam anchored in the estuary at Puerto Montt and we went ashore by tender. It was low tide and the gangway between the tender and the dock was at a very steep angle!

The first stop was in the cruise terminal to get the free Wi-Fi and download the Sunday paper and emails.

Today's walk took us north along the sea to the Angelmo Mercado to look at all of the kiosks selling Chilean products - mostly knitted socks, hats, and sweaters and all kinds of wooden products along with kids’ toys and cloth purses. At the end of the sea walk was the fish market and small restaurants. Marge had fun taking pictures of the market, as always. Since it is a summer Sunday here, many families were out for a stroll. After returning to the terminal, we tendered back to the ship to eat lunch. The wind was up and the swells in the sea made the ride very bouncy.

The tide is out and the gangway steep!

After lunch, we returned to shore to walk the other way along the sea wall where we saw a park with a couple old locomotives, a graffiti covered group of busts of presumably famous people, and the sculpture called Escultura Sentadas Frente al Mar or “Seated in front of the Sea.” This has become a tourist reference of the city, although its physiognomy generates divided opinions.

This is such an important group of sculptures that I cannot find it listed and the busts were covered with graffiti!

After returning to the ship, we went up to the Sports deck (#9) to see the Osorno and Calbuco volcanos just behind town. They finally came out from the clouds for a nice photo op.
