Trips

Our next stop was the Cathedral of Zagreb. In 1094 the cathedral was built on a hill in town. It was rebuilt after an 1800’s earthquake. It is huge with very high ceilings. St. Stepinac is entombed behind the altar. The three large chandeliers were donated from a renovated casino in Las Vegas. There is a 6,000 pipe organ and an unusual script in Glagolitic letters on the back wall.

Our official tour of Zagreb only lasted 1 1/2 hours in this capital city. The rest of the day was our free time. Marge and I spent part of the time at a laundromat one block from the hotel. For $9 US we did a large load and now have everything clean again. That is the first time in all of our trips abroad that we have been able to go to a real laundromat!

After a nap, we went for a 1 1/2 hour stroll to the train station - the Orient Express stopped here - and to the greenway that is called Lenuci's Horseshoe. This is a U-shaped area of seven landscaped town squares and a botanical garden. It was the brainchild of an urban planner called Lenuci toward the end of the 19th century. We wanted to go to the Botanical Garden but it was closed.

Interesting sign

We joined Ines and some of our group at the Purger Restaurant and ate delicious stuffed peppers in a tomato and paprika sauce served with mashed potatoes. It was very good. With two drinks it cost 162 kuna ($24.81 US).
