Mon., 10/31 - Hiroshima
At 6 AM we took our luggage to the hotel lobby and went to breakfast. After walking to the Kyoto train station the group boarded the Nozomi #5 bullet train to Hiroshima.
After arriving in Hiroshima, we left our overnight bags at the Right Royal Hotel and took a trolley to lunch at another small family run restaurant.
After lunch we walked to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The park is adjacent to the T-Bridge that was the target for the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb. The Park is built at the location where the bomb detonated.

In the evening we walked to dinner. Since this is Halloween Night the local teenagers were out cruising the pedestrian shopping street. About half were in costumes - French maids, black cats, judo wrestlers, etc. and most often, two or three or four were all dressed in the same costume. The blow up dragons were the best! After several blocks of these crowds we arrived at a dive on the third floor to have Hiroshima Okonomiyaki.

How to make Hiroshima Okonomiyakis
A crepe-like batter (Japanese pancake) is poured onto a grill. Then shredded cabbage is heaped on, then tempura crisps, green onions, bean sprouts, shrimp or bacon, Udon noodles, egg, a purple sauce, and seaweed on top. The whole thing is then flipped over. The pile is pushed toward your plate and you use a spatula to cut it and move it from the grill to a small plate and eat it with chopsticks. The pile stays hot and it is delicious.
